My “little” family of 8
About
I grew up around photography. And not just any photography--the work of a perfectionist. My stepfather has been in journalism since before I met him nearly 40 years ago, and he continues to produce some of the most beautifully crafted photos, videos and pieces of art I have ever seen. Also, he's super humble and will hate that I am telling you any of this. (Hey, Rob!)
I remember this one image he took of me when I was about 7 years old... I was performing at the Corn Hill Arts Festival (Rochester, NY) with my dance class and he took a close up shot of me on stage. It was black and white, the sun was hitting my face at just the right angle, and I remember thinking even then how powerful an image truly can be. Not because I was in it, but because it made me feel something every time I looked at it--I could feel the hot sun beating down on me, my heart racing as I performed in front of a crowd, my nerves as I tried to remember every step, and the overwhelming excitement of it all. That's what was behind the not-quite-full smile I had on my face. The picture told the whole story--from just one small, fleeting moment in time.
My family has always teased me for "loving the camera," and I am sure this example only adds fuel to their fire... ;) But I actually HATE being in front of the camera. I much prefer to be behind the lens, and that's where you'll find me now. Well, either there or running my kids around, catching up on my "stories" as my husband calls them, or chillin' at my computer with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine as I edit all of the amazing images I am blessed enough to capture each and every day. And so, that leads me to this...
There are so many incredibly talented, artistic, wonderful photographers out there, and I count myself as a student of them all--the mamas, the papas, the young ones and the much older and wiser. I don't claim to be anyone but me, and who I am is a woman with a camera who loves to capture the beauty of the moment and everything in between. I also hate stodgy, posey, forced photos, so expect to get a little goofy, a little close, and a whole lot of comfortable when we meet! There's nothing like a genuine smile, a warm hug, and a silly moment between people who love each other most. I want you to feel something when you look at the images we create together, just as my stepdad was able to do for me all those years ago.
That's my hope. That's my goal. And all of this is me just living a dream.
